About Jacob Farms
In 1867, Samuel Jacob, at the age of 8, came to America from Wexford, Ireland with his two brothers, older sister and brother-in-law. They settled on a farm in Illinois where Samuel worked for his brother-in-law for his board and keep. In 1880, when he was 21, he and his two brothers came to Kansas and settled on a farm one half mile south and two miles east of the current farm site. in 1893, Samuel married and in 1896 bought 160 acres, which would become the current farm site.
Samuel had two sons, Homer and George. Homer lived on the original site and George lived on the current farm site. Homer and George shared some farming operations over the years. It is said that they had a team of horses that would go between the two farms without a driver. George had a son, David, who with his father continued to operate the farm at its current site. David had a son, Steve, who after college entered a partnership with his father and continued the farming operation.
When David retired, Steve brought Terry Jacob, a grandson of Homer Jacob, into the operation and formed a partnership called Jacob Farms & Cattle. Later, with the continued growth of the farming operation and no apparent heirs to the operation, Steve and Terry decided to find a younger person to bring into the operation.
In 2003, they hired Ryan Speer from Dighton, Kansas to help manage the farm. Ryan was working as a agronomist at the Scott City Coop at the time. In 2007, Ryan joined Steve and Terry as a partner. In 2011, Terry retired from the farm.
Today Jacob Farms & Cattle farms over 6000 acres, backgrounds feeder cattle in the winter and has a butcher beef operation. Steve and Ryan bring two agricultural degrees along with over 50 combined years of experience to the operation. Their goal for the future is to continue the highest quality operation by adopting new farming techniques and practices, and by bringing in talented and motivated personnel.
